Somewhere 23 is a new adaptation of the play Somewhere, inspired by the novel Being There by Jerzy Kosinski.
A chance encounter between Chance, a homeless gardener whose entire knowledge of the world comes from gardening and television, and Grand, a businessman searching for innovative rhetoric for the President’s speeches, casts a spotlight on an achievement-driven society governed by interests that serve the image of success at any cost.
The decision to incorporate speeches by U.S. presidents from different periods in history was made in response to the political upheaval taking place in Israel. What distinguishes these speeches is the way they address the people as partners. The rhetoric of American presidents seeks to reach the public and make people feel empowered and influential. This stands in contrast to a period in which Israel’s political leaders have adopted rhetoric that threatens the power and unity of the people.
In Somewhere 23, Elizabeth, Grand’s wife, protests against the blindness that characterizes human relationships. Chance, the gardener, succeeds in reawakening her need for dialogue that acknowledges and recognizes the other.
